IBM Research | Watson | Cambridge | Instant Collaboration

They listed some good assumptions regarding the nature of instant collaboration, defined as:

Instant Collaboration uses light-weight and instantaneous forms of sharing information in order to encourage unstructured ad-hoc collaboration from email. Our goal is to bridge the gap between ad-hoc communication in email and more formal collaboration in shared team workspaces. We are interested in exploring the intersections between egocentric vs. public, unstructured vs. structured, and ad-hoc vs. formal types of collaboration. [IBM Research | Watson | Cambridge | Instant Collaboration]

So, they follow up with a diagram that lists these assumptions as characteristic of Instant Collaboration:

* Few people
* Few pieces of information
* Many activities only involve a few steps
* Dynamic membership
* Short-term rather than long-term.

GEB: "GEB is a search engine that -instead of just showing a list of hits- creates a visual representation of the search results. Webpages are shown as small cubes, with lines connecting them to their parent. When you start a new search, the parent will be the actual search query you entered in the text box. But the interesting part of GEB is the fact that it allows you to search for more than just a few words, it allows you to search for webpages that are related to a search result webpage. In this case, the parent will be the node you expanded. When expanding nodes, GEB searches for webpages that show a strong resemblance to your selection, and maps these around it. Nodes that a close to the parent node are less relevant than nodes that are far away. The logic behind this is that the relevant ones -those that are far away- are the ones you will most likely want to expand on. Mapping the Web is an experiment, and should be viewed as such. It has bugs. It will crash. It will empty your bank accounts and set your house on fire."
